Designed for FIRST Tech Challenge

The REVOLUX Odometry Pod is designed specifically for use on the official FIRST Tech Challenge game field, seamlessly blending with the soft tiles that teams drive on. While this sensor is optimized for the official FIRST Tech Challenge competition field, it can also operate on various other surfaces.

What is "Odometry"?

Just like humans, robots need to be aware of their surroundings and position to function effectively. This is where odometry comes into play. Odometry is a system that combines measurements and calculations to help your robot determine its current location based on the path it has traveled—a process known as "localization". Localization is essential for autonomous robot operation, making a reliable and precise set of sensors crucial for your robot to achieve its full potential on the field.

How does the REVOLUX Odometry Pod help you?

The "odometry pod" is a specialized sensor that allows a robot to precisely track drivetrain movement in a specific direction. Unlike encoders directly mounted on the robot's drive motors, which can lose accuracy over time due to wheel slippage, the odometry pod provides consistent and reliable tracking.

When connected to a controller, the REVOLUX Odometry Pod measures the rotations of its 35mm omni wheel in "ticks". Because the omni wheel only rotates when the entire drivetrain is in motion, the data output is directly tied to drivetrain movement.

For more complex chassis assemblies, a three-pod setup is recommended to accurately measure movement in the X and Y axes as well as the robot's heading. This ensures precise localization and optimal performance on the field.

How do you use the REVOLUX Odometry Pod?

To get started, you'll need to not only mount the sensor on your robot but also convert the raw sensor data into coordinates on the X and Y axes, as well as the heading angle.
